Why not leave your 2-year old in a car to go skiing?

in #news2 years ago

This is not a story about dumb reporting, which is what I normally talk about, but instead about a couple of parents that take horrible to a whole new level.

I've been skiing, I quite enjoy it. I also don't have kids. But I don't need to have kids to understand that leaving your kid in a car in freezing temperatures so that you can hit the slopes is not just dumb, but horribly criminal.

This happened at Killington resort in Vermont, which I have not ever been to but if it is like basically any other ski resort in the world, it is probably pretty expensive. Expensive enough that the people who go to it can probably afford child care or a babysitter for the day.

Temperatures dropped to around 28 degrees, which isn't exactly arctic and probably not cold enough to kill someone but I'm pretty sure there are a whole slew of laws about not leaving your toddler alone in a car for hours regardless of what the temperature is.

One other dumb thing about this story is that the police were told about this via multiple calls, but didn't immediately react for reasons that haven't been explained. Apparently, they didn't even catch up with the irresponsible parents until some time later when they were pulled over. The driver of the car, not satisfied with just child-endangerment charges apparently, was also drunk and was charged with a DUI.

Another thing that I don't understand about this situation is that we have all heard stories about how people have smashed out car windows in order to save dogs from potentially life-threatening situations but none of these good Samaritans were willing to do the same for a human? Maybe it is true what they say about people caring more about dogs than they do about people?

The excuse the couple gave was that they only did 10 runs and checked on their baby after each one. Great parenting guys... just awesome.
