Family, friends mourn Pakistani exchange student killed in Santa Fe school shooting

Sabika Sheik, a 17-year-old Pakistani researcher taking an interest in the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program in the US, was one of the 10 individuals killed when an adolescent colleague outfitted with a shotgun and a gun opened discharge in the Santa Fe High School in Texas yesterday.

This is such a sickening loss; I cannot imagine how her family: mother, father, siblings, everyone, is feeling. Gun violence is a sickening monster that has been let loose in our society.

The United States is too militarized, there is too much firepower out there and in the hands of really, really sick people.

I lost a dear friend to a mass shooting two years ago. Gun violence, for me, became as real as the air that I breathe.

So sorry, Pakistan. The US sends love and condolences.
