iPhone or MacBook is slower? Replace the battery

Every time with the release of a new version of the iOS operating system, the network is full of numerous messages from owners of older models complaining of a general decline in performance. There is even a version that Apple deliberately slows down the devices of past generations, encouraging users to switch to the current models. Meanwhile, the network has a more plausible explanation of why some older models have a slight performance degradation after the update.

Users of the popular forum Reddit in the course of constructive discussion of the relevant topic came to the conclusion that this may not be due to the update of the OS, the culprit may be a rechargeable battery.

The user Reddit with the nickname TeckFire noticed that his iPhone 6s started to work slower and first of all suspected the OS iOS 11, which this year according to the number of errors has clearly broken all records. But this version has disappeared when he saw his brother's iPhone 6 - with the same version of the OS the device worked faster. At more detailed studying of the question the user has found out 20 percent deterioration of the battery. What exactly prompted him to think about replacing the battery is unclear, but it helped. Before replacing the battery, the device typed 1466 and 2512 points in the Geekbench test (in single-threaded and multithreaded modes, respectively) with an average of 2330 and 3984 points, and after replacing it, the result was 2526 and 4456 points! It is reported that the real productivity is also significantly increased.

From all this, a logical assumption was born that when the battery is worn down, the software lowers the frequency of the processor. The user writes that the corresponding measurements using CpuDasherX software have shown an underestimated frequency, but he did not give specific figures.

Interestingly, in the comments to the discussion, other users began to report a significantly increased performance of Apple's laptops after replacing the battery.

It turns out, with a noticeable decrease in performance, the user with respect to the old Apple device should think about replacing the battery.

  • In November last year, Apple launched a special program to replace batteries for owners of smartphones iPhone 6s, which spontaneously shut down. Shortly thereafter, iOS 10.2.1 was released, which fixed the problems in 80% of iPhone 6s and in 70% of iPhone 6. Then it was reported that the update reduced the frequency of the processor if the battery was in bad condition.
