South Korea is reportedly creating an ‘assassination unit’ as part of its special forces, aimed to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.
The day after North Korea conducted its sixth — and most powerful — nuclear test, the South Korean defence minister, Song Young-moo, said ‘special forces decapitation unit’ would be established by the end of the year, according to the New York Times.
According to the report, the South’s military has been ‘retooling helicopters and transport planes’ to go into North Korea during the night to ‘carry out raids’.
Shin Won-sik, a retired South Korean military top operational strategist said:
"The best deterrence we can have, next to having our own nukes, is to make Kim Jong-un fear for his life.
We can now build ballistic missiles that can slam through deep underground bunkers where Kim Jong-un would be hiding.
The idea is how we can instill the kind of fear a nuclear weapon would but do so without a nuke. In the medieval system like
North Korea, Kim Jong-un’s life is as valuable as hundreds of thousands of ordinary people whose lives would be threatened
in a nuclear attack."
The news comes after North Korea warned ‘forthcoming measures’ will ‘make the US suffer the greatest pain’ it’s ever experienced.
The statement was reportedly made by Han Tae Song, North Korea’s envoy to the UN.
Han Tae Song was in Geneva for the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
And it has been revealed any attempt to launch a military offensive against North Korea by the US could potentially result in the deaths of 265,000 people.
Defence analysts have warned the nuclear capabilities of the ‘rogue’ state mean striking before any action is taken, is not an option.
Experts have also revealed potential nuclear targets for North Korea if an attack was launched against, including Los Angeles, Seoul and Tokyo, reports The Daily Star.
