According to White House insiders, US President Donald Trump has labeled African countries and Haiti "shitholes." Meanwhile, Trump denies this, though halfheartedly: The language he used was "hard", but he did not want to use the phrase. But in the twelve or so hours since the first report of the Washington Post's statement, which relied on several anonymous sources, international outrage was high.
After harsh criticism from the United Nations, South Africa and the African Union, who called Trump's admission "racist", Botswana has now also joined in the matter: According to the Ministry for International Cooperation, the US ambassador has been summoned to the capital Gaborone.
The government has expressed its displeasure over the alleged formulation of Trump, it said in an official statement. The Botswana government also asked for clarification. The ambassador should "make it clear that Botswana is also regarded as a shithole country". After all, there are Botswana nationals in the US, and some also have plans to travel there.
The government also wonders that Trump uses such derogatory words when talking about countries with which the US has enjoyed a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship for years.
