in #news6 years ago

Hello all!

Time for the weekly news rundown. I've prepared this special selection for everyone here at steemit, but especially for those so busy at their daily lifes that they don't often hear about the most important happening around our world. This entry has the top 5 world news, according to me. So here is it, enjoy!

5. Europe Wants to Ban Internet Memes

As silly as it sounds, the European Parliament wants to approve new copyright laws that could definitely ban memes and all related parodies across the internet, in other words, all user generated content that is not original.  The most controversial part of the new laws states that platforms such as Facebook and Google must filter the things people post on them and check for copyright infringement. Campaigners say automated checks could reject anything that even possibly infringed copyright, such as memes that use screenshots from movies or TV, something like the filtering Youtube already does, but this time not just for videos.

This is not set in stone, however, additional voting sessions are needed which will be held on January of next year.

4. Romania Makes Same-Sex Marriages Almost Impossible

Romania's senate overwhelmingly backed a citizens' initiative on Tuesday to change the definition of family in the constitution in a nationwide referendum, a move that could make it impossible to legalize same-sex unions in the future.

Romania's civil code of rules for relations between citizens already bans same-sex civil partnerships.  In June, the European Court of Justice ruled that European Union states which have not legalized gay marriage must still offer same-sex spouses residency rights equal to those of straight couples.

3. Trump and Muslim Rights

The state of Xinjiang in China’s northwest has long been a source of trouble, with Uighurs occasionally turning to violence to protest Beijing’s rule. This being China, Beijing’s response has been predictably disproportionate. Up to one million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities have been rounded up and placed in concentration camps. Those who remain free are subject to a level of surveillance so intense that really makes you think about human rights, and that's precisely what the White House thought about.

According to multiple reports, the Trump administration is weighing sanctions against China. China’s abuse of its Uighur Muslim minority

2. Brazil's Most Popular Candidate is Out of The Presidential Race

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's history is an interesting one. He was the president of Brazil form 2003 to 2011. In 2018 he was put into jail for money laundering activities, the authorities gave him 12 years at prison. Despite that, he still found a way to elect himself to the position of president, yet again.

According to polls across the country, Lula is by far the most popular candidate, or should I was, he was. After Brazilian authorities wanted to exclude him from the race, Lula finally suspended his campaign this past Tuesday, putting an end to his political career, at least for now.

1. Ethiopia And Eritrea Borders Are Opened After 20 Years

On Tuesday, Ethiopia and Eritrea reopened two border crossings between their nations for the first time in 20 years. There were nice sights of families and friends who had been apart for two decades who were finally reunited.

The newly opened borders also give Ethiopia easy access to a seaport for the first time since 1998, which is an excellent extra for the African country.
