Since I'm a Bills fan, I don't want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl.

That said, I want them to go as far as possible with Brock Purdy.

Let's be real, the Deshaun Watson contract fucked up the quarterback market. Over the last decade, it's been rare for teams to go all the way after their quarterbacks go off their rookie contracts. Namely, the trend has been to pay quarterbacks so much that teams can't afford other players.

The Watson deal is pretty clearly why Lamar Jackson still hasn't been extended; and, it's why Kyler Murray got more money than Josh Allen, despite Murray never having won a playoff game. Watson got the best contract in the history of football, with all that baggage. I still thank the primordial ooze from which all life sprung that my Bills locked down Josh Allen before the Watson deal reset the market.

If the 49ers can make a run with Mr. Irrelevant, who is making well less than a million dollars for the next four years, that may undo some of the damage that the Watson contract created.

Of course, I'd prefer it if we lived in a perfect world, and Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson got better deals than Deshaun Watson -- they're all better quarterbacks and better people. That ship has sailed.

Brock Purdy could change the game again. He could set a new precedent, and a new baseline.
