From Trondheim to Kristiansand extends the E39, a motorway of European designation 1,330 kilometers away. Its route crosses one of the most arduous orographies of the entire planet: the Norwegian fjords. With kilometric slopes and enormous depths, the government had no choice but to build the road surrounding the most difficult parts and offering ferry services for cars that do not want to take a 2 or 3 hour detour on the road to cross a distance of a few kilometers of water.
The new project of the Oslo government begins its first phase now and whose works will be undertaken in different groups with the aim of creating a “uncut” highway by the end of the next decade. Right now, the E39 has eight different ferries during its journey that operate continuously moving vehicles and people through its dangerous waters.
The new E39 will not be easy. One of the most complex parts will be the connection between the islands of Rennesøy and Vestre Bokn, which currently have several underwater bridges and tunnels to other places but are not linked together except by a ferry service. The new project plans a 26-kilometer tunnel at depths of almost 400 meters below the seabed.
It will be the longest underwater tunnel in the world and will have an exit halfway to offer an alternative route to the citizens of Kvitsøy in the form of a gigantic roundabout. The works of this element have already begun and will be one of the most complex parts of all planned. The Norwegian government estimates its cost at more than 1.7 billion euros.
