When we film sex movies we make the same scene 3 times!! If we include photoshooting and softcore version, this is 2 times, then we have a hardcore 3rd version! So this is 3 times we must put clothes back on again and begin this all again! Not every company makes softcore version so sometimes we do not have to do this, which makes me happy!
We must make time to create the story, this story is most important for many people to imagine fantasy really happens or might happen for them one day.
There is no way to avoid making photos. Before we begin any acting or sex I make 1 hour photos solo like this.....
You can see here the differents quality of video or with photography lights. We must make time for photo positions and the photographer cannot take some photo during video because he is making noises and distractions and flash lights.
So if we take 1 hour to my solo photo, 1 hour make acting, and 1 hour to make photos and 2 hours to make sex video then we have 5 hours. If there is softcore then we must make sex for more time.
How much actual footage do they shoot?
I think one or two hours of shooting is average time.
How often are multiple takes necessary?
Only for acting and scripts we must make many takes. Once the sex begins they like to allow us freedom to go with the flow and try not to stop us. Some company do this stop start stop start and performers do not like this very much. Dependings who is our Director.
There can sometimes be some small problems and we must reshoot some small action, like to be making move to new different position or to say some words again for the microphones.

I wish I read this post before I wrote my book. There were a few things I made an educated guess on and that I'd found out through research, but I had no idea you could shoot the same scene three times for a softcore version etc...

There was once another version of super-soft where we cannot show boobs or talk dirty, I think for some countries or hotels, but this did not last long. No one likes to make the same sex 4 times!!!!!
I know certain countries have specific rules regarding censorship and pornography in general, so this doesn't surprise me. But I can't imagine the intensity and passion being there the fourth time around (presumably in the same shoot) so it makes sense that this way of filming didn't last!
The super soft version doesn't sound fun for anyone involved though...
