Russia is seeking to reassert its sea power across the world to face down “new threats” posed by enemies, including the US navy.
A new nuclear-powered submarine, codenamed Project 955A Borei, is to join the Russia’s global fleet of 100 warships from November.
Stretching the length of almost two football pitches, the submarine can carry sixteen Bulava missiles fitted with 10 nuclear warheads.
Announcing the launch, admiral Vladimir Korolev, head of the Russian navy, said the submarine will embark from a shipyard in the city of Severodvinsk.
“In the near future, the Severodvinsk-based Sevmash Shipyard will float out a new nuclear powered missile underwater cruiser, the Knyaz Vladimir, from the slipway.
“The event will take place in November,” he said.
Korolev said that the deployment shows that Russia’s navy is still a dominant force across the world.
“The Navy, as befits a sea power’s fleet, has regained its presence in the world ocean, with over 100 warships of all four fleets present in the far fields and sea areas," he said.
