So today I made a little visit to another one of my local monuments, this time "Needle's Eye", the light was lovely, although was hard to keep an eye on the drone with the low winter sun.
As the story goes, this monument was built as a bet, as the man who lived in Wentworth House at the time (sorry forgot which marquis it was), bet someone that he could drive a horse and carriage through the eye of a needle, hence why this was built. Although, this is just a story that's been passed down the generations.
Needle's Eye is the smallest of the four monuments around Rotherham, the others, Rockingham Mausoleum, Hoober Stand & Keppel's Column, all dominate the skyline, and you can see at least one of these monuments from whichever side you approach Rotherham, although Keppels Column is the tallest of all these.
Little is known as to when this was built, although research suggests it was built between 1722-1728, making it the earliest of the four monuments to be built in the Wentworth Park Estate.
If memory serves me correctly, this was situated on the old road out of Wentworth, but now sits quietly away from the busy road.
Apart from some logging, the area is so quiet, it was lovely just to hear the birds singing, I even spotted a bull finch in one of the trees.
On the way towards the monument (from the main road), there is a vinegar stone, which was used during the times of the plague that swept over europe (if not the world), and I'm not talking about covid lol.
If you are in the area, the monument can be found by clicking here! (google maps co-ordinates). Just be aware you have to park on the main road, and walk about 2 minutes to the monument.
