Tofu is a food made from coagulated soybean seed presses. Tofu comes from China, as well as soy sauce, tauco, bakpau, and meatballs. The name "tofu" is an uptake of the Hokkien (tauhu) (Chinese: 豆腐, hanyu pinyin: doufu), which literally means "fermented soybean". Tofu has been known in China since the Han dynasty about 2200 years ago. The discoverer was Liu An (Chinese: 劉 安) who was a nobleman, the grandson of the Han Emperor Gaozu, Liu Bang, who founded the Han dynasty.

Tofu has been indigenized in Indonesia so that various variants of tofu and dishes made from tofu have emerged. The outer appearance knows that there is a white or yellow color. Due to its popularity, tofu is an integral part that is found in places to eat at various social levels in Indonesia.

Fried tofu is usually served to accompany foods with liquid soup, such as meatball noodles and soup; or batagor. Siomay, a form of dim sum, also uses steamed tofu as a component.
