Regardless of efficiencies, I'm surprised (probably through naivety thought), that solar isn't a "must have" for new builds or significant renovations. Surely the increase in use would drive down the cost and therefore make it more cost effective for the masses? We've a south facing roof and I'd love to go solar but it's still just far too costly.

Sort:  

Mass adoption and government policies to support that would be the key strategies going forward. Having said that there are multitude of other limitations - battery management, solar unit efficiency and the most important - the cost issue. Renewable energy sources are still not there for the mass and are considered an "innovative technique".
