Things are currently heating up in the Rio Olympics with the U. S. A. on top (13 gold medals, 12 silver medals & 10 bronze medals). I decided to bring you guys some facts about the history of the games!
- Gold medals haven't been solid gold since 1912
- Since 1896 the number of female contestants has gone from a whopping 0% to 45%.
- From the years 1912 to 1948 there was many art categories including painting, music & literature.
- The torch is lit with a parabolic mirror just as it was two thousand years ago.
- Golf is coming back to the Olympics! After going missing for 112 years golf finally found its way back.
- The winter Olympic games didn't exist until 1924.
- The word Marathon comes from the run of a Greek soldier who ran 25 miles from Greece to Athens to spread word that the Persians had been defeated.
Hope you learned something!
Wouldn't be great if the female representation on steemit went up to 45% too :)?
It'll get up there! Thanks for the comment!
Great post @jbouchard12. Very interesting facts. Had no idea about most of them.
Really nice post jb; I haven't really watched any Olympics this year, too busy Steemin!

they've been awesome! Make sure to check them out before they're over. My favorite event 'skeet shooting' is on today.

Fact 8: Hitler invented all the pageantry that we've come to know in rearguards to the modern day Olympics. Torch lighting? Yep, his idea.
