Yeah there are a few. The Pure Librem 5 was the biggest that I can recall, and before that Canonical had legit partners for Ubuntu Touch which has since become UBports when handed to the community.
Pinephone from Pine64. And then there's Linux images for various phones, but it often comes down to a specific image for a specific model because of the complexities of the various system on chips.

I've not tried any of them either, but from what I've seen they aren't going to be able to match Android or iPhone performance.

In Russia and other non-US nations there is something called the Jolla Sailfish OS, and phones pre-loaded with it, but there are certain drawbacks with the licensing of that OS as well. But it allegedly can run Android APKs.
