We Used To Run
A Medicine Song Honoring Wild Horses
With this song, my intention is to generate gratitude for the freedoms I feel when I imagine myself as a wild horse. Freedom is the energetic experience that is held and expressed in this song, in my interpretation. This song arrived in my life during a 5-day journey in the Texas Hill Country a year ago, and it continues to move and shape me as I explore what freedom means to me.
"We Used To Run" is my submission for Hive Open Mic - Week 3. This song fits the theme, "Open Path," with the imagery of running as a wild horse as free as the wind.
This song is the result of a life-changing experience I am sharing below. Before the words came—swift and crystalline—I found myself receiving healing in my sacral chakra, relating with sexuality, and creative ability. Ah, the feeling of freedom! Massive breakthroughs continue for me to this day, as I further deepen the roots of bonding with the people I'm blessed to be with in life, where I belong.
Lyrics
Revealed itself as we were blazing through
Ferocious love pumping through every vein
Long tails dashing in the seas
I reached my neck out to hug you
When we were with the melody of the moment
We would be coasting in the angelic breeze
The flowers outnumbering the patches of bare earth
And when we ran it was as free as the wind
The path was open all ways open
Into the future and mine was bright and blue
When we remember where we come from
We become one with the memory
Remembrance
Looking back, the medicine path of this song seems divinely orchestrated to me. It started through a crystal singing bowl, tuned to a frequency targeting the root chakra. I found myself in a prayer space, bathing in the healing vibration of that musical instrument, gaining composure, confidence, and security in all I am as a person—a dad, a lover, a brother, a Warrior of the Light, a Creative Fire, a Sacred Medicine Cultivator...
As the journey continued, I saw my brother Carlos wavering as he walked across the space, nearly crashing into another crystal singing bowl—the one targeting the heart-chakra—and I made a diving save to catch him when he fell, as if I was a soaring angel, with my soft palm pillowing his head at the very last second, just as he fell to the ground. He crash-landed in my hand.
Continuing across the skywalk, I found myself again at a singing bowl, this time targeting the sacral chakra. I hesitated to play the singing bowl, knowing that the other musicians were preparing to play a song, and this was a test of my newfound security. Moments after I sounded the bowl, my ears were delighted to hear a guitar, flute, and voice accompanying me in the very same tone: Key of D.
At this time, I observed a golden unicorn, glowing and shining in the candlelight. Here, I imagined / felt / remembered the existence of a unicorn, with all his incredible beauty, and the need to hide from bounty hunters and others who found the beauty unbearable. I saw the sad reality of life as a unicorn, having to hide in isolation much of the time, existing purely in solitude.
Something deep and profound moved in me when I saw myself as this unicorn, standing in all my strength, glory, and majesty. I felt the power in my legs, and the lightness in my hooves, able to zoom and fly like the wind, so effortlessly, anywhere I wished to be. And I wished to be in a magical land where the flowers bloomed perpetually, as if Spring flowers bloomed alive in my every footstep. Magical.
