Open Source-ness is ethical because it allows sharing (what would be called "pirating", or more correctly "copyright infringement") and participation in development. Also, while Windows is useless on its own (without software), GNU/Linux distributions offer not just the operating system but also library/collection of useful ethically-licensed software.
