Ubuntu generally works really well and has done for a very long time. It isn't flashy, bleeding edge, or exciting like a lot of things. It doesn't ship the bleeding edge packages. Ubuntu aims to deliver stability for its users. So this is actually a good thing.

There are historical gripes regarding the communications of certain things. I won't get into them, but there were some poorly conveyed messages which lead to some problems.

Well known people like Stallman have made claims about Ubuntu which are trotted out every so many years.

Snaps are a good technology but the delivery and management of expectations were poor. This lead to a poor initial impression that has not been shaken by many people. I like snaps, I make snaps, I use snaps. They have improved considerably.
Snaps provide a way to decouple applications from system libraries. It allows us to ship new versions of software quickly to users, it's really a good idea.

Snaps give applications confinement, so they can't steal your data and send it to . The performance hit should be small after the squashfs has been unpacked.

There are a few other things, but I won't go into them now.

I think Ubuntu is a great distribution that is generally well maintained and I've used it for about 18 years.
