Changeling - From Man to....???

Hello everyone!

I wanted to share my progression post for this drawing today. I took a lot of pictures at different stages.

This drawing, as I mentioned before is for my drawing class this semester. I was very proud of it because it showed how much I had progressed as an artist through life drawing/figure study classes.

Originally I was going to give this guy wings and have him be more of a traditional demon looking creature but I've been really into drawing trees and branches for a while. I feel like the texture is so interesting so I got into it with the branch shapes. When I was finished I gave him the name of "changeling". As @aussieninja mentioned it would be interesting to see him progress from man into tree creature more and more.

Here are some stages of the drawing:

This picture was done by laying down some graphite first and erasing away the shapes of the body. My teacher called it "subtractive" drawing. It was difficult for me at first but I ended up really liking it because I draw very flat sometimes. Thinking about the object or body in shapes of light and shadow helped me get better at creating a sense of space and weight.

I was very proud of this hand!!

The drawing was done with graphite and charcoal and took about two or three days to complete. It is 18 x 24" so fairly large. 😄

I hope you enjoy!

Loved this progression piece! It's so hard for non-artists to see how they could ever produce something like The Changeling... but these progress shots make it so much more possible (not to take away from the skill of actually drawing, etc).

I'm super chuffed that I might have influenced the creative direction of either this piece or a follow up one...

You definitely helped solidify this guy as a character! I like the idea of him changing over time with that thoughtful but strangely sinister vibe.
