What are running records?

Running records can be brief, continuous descriptions. Observer use a narrative style to record information. It also can be a detailed written account of everything observed about the child for a period of time. Includes what the child says, as well as relevant actions and responses of others.

Why use running records?

Running records are used mostly to observe preschoolers who are constantly developing skills in understanding and expressing language. Young children show they understand language when they ask and answer questions, follow instructions and tell stories.

Running records give the best detail of any observation method that allows others to read the account and to understand the situation clearly. Further information like interpretation can be added later.

However, as compared to checklists, the running record requires careful attention and skilful note-taking. It may be difficult to keep up with what is happening. Because conversation goes very quickly, the observer may also have to decide what is important and what is not necessary to record. The use of abbreviations and symbols are needed. Hence, it seems impractical for a teacher to use.

Frequently ask questions on running records

  1. How do your child use body language and facial expressions to communicate?
  2. How do your child learn the rules of grammar?
  3. If your child had difficulty speaking or communicating clearly, how did the teachers and other children respond?
