Flip Flop, it's a Lop...

in #pet2 years ago

We started out raising a couple rabbits for our own meat. I even made the choice of not raising pet stock breeds for the past few years. In fact, we got well away from anything that would be a pet type of bunny. Not to say that you couldn't make a pet out of pretty much aaaany rabbit. Pets just were not on our radar, so to speak.

That changed this past summer. Our kiddos won a couple of bunnies at the local county fair. One of them is definitely NOT the kind you would eat. I mean, you would find more meat on a squirrel than you would on this (stupidly adorable) hairball. But only one of the prize buns was a pet type. ( a mini Lop breed) The other has grown into a full sized standard Rex. She is too big for the lil guy to get his game on with. (not that he wouldn't try if we let him...she's just several factors of size BIGGER than he is)

So, I had to find the lil guy a girlfriend of his stature. It took me a while, but I found him a few choices. One of them being this nicely patterned broken red. I had to get on a waiting list with the breeder. That list ended up being a 4 month wait. But at last I could bring home a date for our lil guy.

Things were looking pretty good, until I noticed some....odd behavior. At least, odd for a "female" rabbit to be doing. Yea, you guessed it. The gender fairy stopped by and bopped this one into a guy. Argh! I really did not have room in our stocks for another male. Even one as nice as this guy. So I found him a new home where he gets plenty of attention and can live out a quality pet life.

But hope is not lost for our breeding program. I have at 3 smaller breed buns for our Andi to make play time with. They just don't have this nice broken red/orange pelt. But oh well. I will have to snap some pics of them later this week and post them. If you watched our video we posted a few days ago, you might have seen them already. Stay tuned here for more updates...
