The bonsai exhibit was really awesome. One was 35 years old and probably as tall as me in a gigantic pot. They were all behind glass though, so photographing them didn't do them justice.
Coloring is definitely a part of it, a few of the categories were specific shades. But some of the more stunning patterns and variations got scored lower so it must also have to do with how the leaves grow or something lol.
