A thought experiment.

in #philosophy7 years ago

A friend of mine just brought my attention to a study done in 2016 that I strangely enough hadn't seen before.
It claims if the world went plant based in diet that by 2050 we could prevent 8.1 million human deaths per year and also save us $1 trillion a year.

I haven't read the whole study, but.. Assuming it is true.. The numbers are just overwhelming.

I don't see how anyone could look at these numbers and be like.. "Well.. That sucks, but.. I still need to eat excessive amounts of meat."

In order to do that, you really sort of prove that you not only don't care about the well being of those animals you sacrifice, but that you also don't really care much about the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people who could be saved from dying, and you also don't seem to care much about yourself either cause it's not healthy.

AND.. Something many people seem to equate with more value than human or animal life, which is money.. 1 trillion a year.. That's no joke. That could be much better spent elsewhere.. Not to mention all the other environmental and ethical elements of the discussion.

So, once again.. I can't prove the veracity of the study as I haven't done a deep dive and not sure I plan to as I'm so busy elsewhere, but it's not surprising to me at all if true based on all the other research I've done.

Also.. Perhaps it's enough for some of you to just do a mental experiment. I know some "right-winger" Infowars conspiracy types think this is all a conspiracy to take away their freedom and make them weak or to usher in the NWO which is already here by the way, Infowars just did a bit recently on veganism actually which confirmed this stereotype among a good portion of that demographic of people.

However.. Just do a mental experiment please for me if you don't mind. Run the numbers through your mind, pretend they are real for just a minute or so at least.

Is your taste pleasure and everyone elses who enjoys a "bloody" diet worth more than $1 trillion and over 8 million human lives a year?

If that's not enough to make you reconsider your habits.. I really don't know what is.. That's essentially close to around how many Jews it is believed Hitler/Nazi Germany killed during WW2 according to various different studies I've seen.

If these numbers are true, we could essentially prevent a human holocaust comparable to what Hitler/Nazi Germany did in terms of statistical numbers of deaths to the Jews every single year just by eating plants instead of violently abusing and killing animals.

Let that sink in for a bit. What's more important.. The taste you get from robbing that poor animal of it's life and eating it.. Or $1 trillion and a loss of human life comparable to what Hitler/Nazi Germany did to the Jews every single year?

Will post the link below so you can go do a deep dive if you want to, or just if you wanna read the article itself and not get SUPER deep into the details.

Vegan anarchism for the win.

Word! It was awesome to discover that you're also both a vegan and anarchist! I think that's one reason I tend to resonate so much with your posts. Unfortunately I don't meet vegan anarchists that often, but when I do.. They seem like really awesome people! :)

That is complex philosophy..... that's way i have to go again to read your whole articls for clear-cut understand.

My point in being vegetarian is "I can and I would eat meat again... but I just don't want it anymore. I don't crave for it anymore, my belly isn't screaming I WANT THAT!".

I've seen enough, my brain has recalibrated something inside and started saying "I don't need this shit anymore". And I don't :)
