RACE: Reality or Illusion?

in #philosophy6 years ago

I have always pondered on the reason behind discrimination regarding colors. Sometimes i wonder if these colors are there or we are simply under the illusion that there are colors.

Considering the rationale behind the 'veil of ignorance theory' by John Rawls, i find it hard to accept that there is such a color in reality.

Growing up and reading about the incident that happened when people were under this prejudice that one race is superior to the other, i was shocked and saddened by what we did to ourselves under the illusion that one color is different from the other.

Before making my point, i will like to briefly define race and racism. This will enable us to understand the crux of the issue on ground.

A race is a grouping of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into categories generally viewed as inherently distinct by society. Source

Racism on the other hand, is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity. Source

We shouldn't forget that the meaning of race is our construct. Also, racism clearly explains what i earlier stated about people being under the illusion that one race is superior to the other.

It is alarming that we kill one another over this discrimination. What we fail to ask or do is examine these people we consider inferior. Do they have teeth, ears, nose, legs, hand, etc, like your own or different ones? Is there anything that physically suggests one race is inferior to the other? What do we mean by the word 'inferior'? Are we saying their cultures and customs or physical appearances are inferior to our own?

For the record, no White is different from Black. We are first HUMAN before our cultures. Have we even thought of the fact that we are not responsible for our colors?

I didn't choose to be Black and you never chose to be White. We just found ourselves to have these physical colors which have nothing to do with being human.

As White, think of yourself not having that color. If it is hard to let go of your color, then see yourself as human being and you will understand and appreciate humanity for what it is. Similarly, the Blacks should forget having that color and see themselves as White to understand what it means to be White. We will all come to one conclusion and that is the fact that we are HUMAN BEINGS. This is enough for us to understand that this race which in turn gave birth to racism is nothing but an illusion.

The only time you can consider yourself superior to another person is when you put yourself in his shoes and see that his less human but we know there is nothing like ‘less human’. You are either human or not. You cannot be less human or super human.

The moment we see ourselves as one entity, the moment we realise that humanity must always come first when we are judging one another. See yourself as human first before your color.

Thanks.

Yeah right, we are all human and we became human before our colour. Up till now, some still consider their race to be better than others. For me, whatever colour you have or race is immaterial, what impact you are able to make on people's life matter most to me.. Weldone Euronation

color, religion; this are the characteristics people take a look at when judging. i hope all this comes to an end

This is really sad @camillius

We hope it end too! Thanks for your contribution.

Yea. We hope for a future where like Dr Luther spoke of, the judgements will not be based on the color of skin but the content of our character. We need to magnify virtue over shallow differences.
🙏

Truth is, no one chose his colour... It all came by chance.

I agree with this... Let's all see ourselves as humans first... Then maybe the world would be better for it.

on point @uzzy25
Humanity should come first!

Well at this stage i believe everyone chooses what to believe in. So some choose to believe in discrimination . I choose to stand on ,i am best and can do better on how i see myself

Nice piece. People believe there are 4 or 5 different races, no there aren't, there is only one race,

The human race

Race is bullshit! Resteemed!

Yea, no race is superior to others. We should all respect ourselves and respect the human beings we are

The first mistake we made has human was adding word or will I say creating Word which will use to distinguish ourselves from one another. Words like am white, you are black, am fair you are dark.. We are all human we don't have to distinguish ourselves in other feel superior.. #wearehuman
#saynotoracism

This is a question we need to ask ourselves people set these boundaries but we all bleed the same. I really enjoyed reading your post.
