I feel as though this is a crisis for all fields of academia that involve thought and cognition, and things that examine and alter our ontological experience.

So true. First, so sorry for only replying now. Second, I think as we move into more and more specialised fields, people do not communicate enough, stories are not shared, and while we see everyone trying to embrace cross-disciplinary discussions, people still function in their silos.
