A conversation with a pencil

in #philosophy6 years ago

Imagine for a second that you could have a conversation with a pencil...

On a random day you pick "it" up to draw or write a note and 'it' looks up at you and asks ~ "what am I? Where do I come from and what is the meaning of my existence?"

You, would most likely have a perplexed look on your face while you're trying to fathom the question and the task of answering adequately.

You could start by telling 'it' that a pencil is made of wood and that wood is actually a part of a once enormous tree...
Of course, only hoping he can fathom the concept of a tree, since he has no eyes to witness one.
You try not to even mention the paper he's been gliding on his entire existence cause that too is made of the same tree and good luck explaining that...

You continue by saying that the meaning of 'its' existence is to be used as a tool, at times to draw art or write letters that build words which can become sentences, notes or lyrics, poems and stories allowing creativity and information to be transferred from one being to another.
" It is a very important existence! " you assure 'it'.

At this point the pencil is obviously confused. None of what you said made any logic to him.

"Nonsense" he says!
"I glide on this thing underneath me until my thread shortens, then I enter a device that lengthens my thread but shortens my body until there is no thread left. A satisfying existence he adds!“ and continues his day as if nothing was said.

While he is correct in his perceptive of a pencils life, you on the other hand know that there is much more truth to that. Yet to try and argue will be futile.

A week passes and the pencil speaks again about this philosophical predicament. He tells you that he's had a vision, that he has been enlightened and he now understands his greater roll as a pencil. He promises to enlighten others and be their beacon of light.
He continues to tell you that he can feel his past life as an enormous tree...

You smile and realize that there is no point in telling him that this once enormous tree was once a tiny little seed, no bigger than the pencil himself.

If there was ever a 'being' that could actually tell you
where you came from and the reason for your existence, please don't be surprised if you cannot fathom the answer!

Thank you for reading!
