Spinning Dish - Camera Rotation

in #photofeed2 years ago (edited)

Another Light Painting from the Playground.

Haven't been on a playground for years. Here together with some friends we all picked some spots and came out with some cool Light Paintings. Here I picked one of those spinning dishes for the shot.

From the beginning, I intended to make it bi-color, blue and orange always work. To add another effect was easy as I love the fiber optic whip. Here I chose the bigger one to fill the space.

So at first, I would shine the flashlight into the dish and then jump into the center and make the fiber whip tangle as it was a fire. Same procedure once the camera was rotated 180° around.

What were the settings here?

The first shot is a 437 seconds single exposure with the camera set to ISO 100. The Image below had a 232 seconds exposure time. In order to get the cool angle, I used the LAOWA 12mm Zero D F2.8 lens.

The Set-Up for the Photo:

You see I have installed the Camera Rotation tool on the tripod. Here I would open the lens two times in horizontal 180° stops. You see it's not that big. Which is super nice for Light Painting. Not much running = very convenient.

How to get the Twist in your Photo? Camera rotation Explained.

Not too long ago I wrote up an article on the topic. It has been published on my website and here on Hive as a blog post.
Camera Rotation belongs certainly to Kinetic photography and it is not a very common technique amongst photographers. Light Paintings are choreographed movements with light tools carried out with the camera during a single exposure. During a Camera Rotation, the light sources are often in a fixed position about the camera, and the light trails are then drawn into the picture solely by the camera movements.

It all comes down to having the camera in different positions or moving “around” during the image. To do so you will need some fixation of your camera. See the image above. There are multiple methods to the madness. As a LightPainter, I would use two major categories. A) Lens is open during the entire Rotation exposure time and B) Closing the lens during the rotation steps and open to imprint the chosen scene. What follows is that people get creative and mix all sorts of methods. But let us look at the first two categories.

See the making of using this technique.

I hope it was also inspirational. If you have more questions please do not hesitate. I am happy to share my knowledge.
