Escaping Into a World With Books

in #photofeed8 years ago

Reading Sci-Fi Fantasy is one of the most addictive things in my life. It comes a close second to coffee. Although I love reading, I don't tend to branch out too much and just read anything for the sake of it. At the moment I'm reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. Which is a 10 volume EPIC series with a world unlike any other series I've read (More characters and going-on's than Game of Thrones). This is the second time I'm reading it and that's another thing about my reading style. I have a few series that I have read and I tend to re-read them multiple times and each time I get more out of it because I become more familiar with the characters and the world.

I'm not looking for suggestions on what to read but if anyone has read any of the following I'd be more than happy to start a conversation about them :)

Frank Herbert - Dune series (my favourite because of the philosophies and the believable future)
Steven Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen
David Eddings - Belgariad (and Malloreon) and prequels
Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time

I have read more but these are my fav's

I read most of Malazan Book of the Fallen many years ago but I think I was too young and it didn't click and I didn't continue. It wasn't as relatable at the time as other series, like GoT, but I'd have to give it another go. I haven't read a fantasy novel in a long time. I did a 180 switch from all fantasy all the time to mostly non-fiction and non-fantasy novels. Wouldn't hurt to get back into it. I keep hearing about how good The Name of the Wind is, but it may be a little too "magical" (guessing, not having read it). I prefer fantasy novels where the physics, if you will, are more practical and down to earth, and the magic is mysterious and unknown.

It can be annoying when the magic is just an excuse to be able to do anything. It needs it's own restrictions and difficulties or repercussions. I really enjoy the futility theme that runs through the Malazan series.
I haven't heard of the Name of the Wind but maybe I'll look into it. I'm just on book 3/10 and I'm reading not very often so it might be a while 😁

Yes, that's exactly my problem with it. I love Harry Potter, but that system of magic doesn't translate into the kind of high fantasy stories I like to read.

Lol, that'll take you about a year to get through. Those are the thickest books I've ever read.

Hmmm i do have some audible credits available maybe i'll give it a shot. But i did start the Bobiverse series and i need to move to the next book but it's been like a year. haha

Aweomse pic of course

Bobiverse...interesting...
I just said in another comment that the audio version of the Malazan series is 16 days 5 hours long!

Woah!! That's super long. Is it that good? I've been trying to ween myself off of video while editing and listen to more books. I usually listen double speed. So i guess that makes it 8 days of audio. hahahaa

Incredible shot Kieran! I'm hanging to get to NZ

Go. Just go. Short flight. Unlimited fun.

I think I will next year!

For me, the Dune series
Asimov's Robots, and his Foundation Series. ... and alter, morphed together.
CJ Cherryh's Chanur books.

Did you make it to the end of the Dune series? I refuse to see the movie so it doesn't ruin my vision of it!

yes.
I am actually about to start some of the books co-written by his (Frank Herbert's) son and Kevin J Poul.

More characters and goings-on than Game of Thrones, damn that must be a freaking epic XD If I can ever get myself organised enough to have time to read, might have to check that one out :)

Love the colour of that light :)

goatsig

Just make sure you have plenty of time on your hands. The audio version is 16 days and 5 hours long apparently

Yeh, about that. That's one of the things I don't have XD

goatsig

I will have to check it out when I have more time on my hands....

Soooo...never?

Not never; perhaps when I am drifting though the doldrums on a sail boat.
