30 minutes before sunset or how to get home

in #photography5 years ago

Going in winter to shoot a sunset on the Staritsky peninsula, you should prepare for the night transition to the city. There are no roads here, and on snowshoes almost all directions will be open to you. To determine the time before sunset "eye patch" allows a simple method. You need to stretch out your hand and count how many fingers fit between the lower edge of the sun and the horizon. 1 finger is about 15 minutes. If you have not decided on the point of shooting, then having estimated the time until sunset, you may try to decide quickly and find yourself ready for shooting.

As a rule, when the sun falls beyond the horizon, the air temperature drops, it becomes colder. Batteries of small capacity in the cold quickly subside and fail. This should be considered and attention should also be paid to the selection of batteries and flashlight models. Now the most common lithium-ion batteries. The smaller the capacity of such a battery, the sooner it will no longer power your flashlight when it cools down. Since I like to improve hiking things, this moment was a way for me to realize this little hobby. For my Led Lenser headlamp, I made a special “warm” battery of 4 Li-Ion 18650 batteries, pulled from an old laptop battery. Banks were checked for uniformity of wear, charged and connected in parallel. Additionally, a recharge / overdischarge protection card was removed from the battery from a cell phone. The power cord was removed from under the clothes and connected to the power supply of the lantern. Naturally, the power supply of the lantern has undergone some design changes. Thus, I achieved that the power of the flashlight did not have to be taken care of during the week of autonomous existence. Such a capacious battery was not afraid of frost, but at the same time could power a cell phone, if necessary.

In general, you can simply buy a flashlight, which is powered by large batteries. For example, there are lanterns powered by Li-Ion 26650 batteries. These batteries have a large capacity of up to 6 ampere hours and are very tolerant of frost. I managed to check them in the work in the cold to -30 degrees. Worked without complaints and failures. The best of those that I used.

In addition to lighting and equipment, it is worthwhile to have some reserve for products and have matches and dry fuel with you; this may be required during a long transition or for an emergency. This is a mandatory set of the photographer, and any other tourist or mushroom picker.
