| After I had left Shaoguan in 2007, I returned to Germany because I had started looking for a new job too late (as usual) & had not yet found one. But back in Germany I quickly got a job offer from a polytechnic in Ningbo. Since I liked life in China & had a girlfriend there, I of course took the opportunity. With a tourist visa I went to Ningbo. | Nachdem ich 2007 Shaoguan verlassen hatte, kehrte ich zunächst nach Deutschland zurück, da ich (wie üblich) zu spät angefangen hatte, einen neuen Job zu suchen & noch nichts gefunden hatte. Aber in Deutschland bekam ich dann recht schnell ein Angebot von einem Polytechnikum in Ningbo. Da mir das Leben in China gefiel & ich dort eine Freundin hatte, ergriff ich natürlich die Gelegenheit. Mit einem Touristenvisa machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Ningbo. |

| The city allegedly has more than 7 million inhabitants, but that's just due to the way China counts (or defines city limits). Ningbo itself is far smaller. & its districts can be rather far apart, as I had to notice. The polytechnic was not actually in Ningbo, but in Beilun. To get from one to the other by public bus, it took 90 minutes or more. | Die Stadt hat angeblich mehr als 7 millionen Einwohner, aber das liegt an der Zählweise Chinas (bzw. an dortigen Definitionen). Das eigentliche Ningbo ist deutlich kleiner & die einzelnen Stadtteile können recht weit auseinanderliegen, wie ich feststellen mußte. Das Polytechnikum war z.B. nicht in Ningbo selber, sondern in Beilun. Um dahinzukommen, brauchte man mit dem Bus 90 Minuten oder mehr. |

| The polytechnic had to prepare some documents so that I could go to Hong Kong for a work visa. Hence I had time for a first walk into Beilun. | The above shows the typical style of older buildings in the Ningbo area (&, for what I have seen, most of Zhejiang). Nowadays only the poorer part of the population lives in those, though. | As you can see, most of Beilun was actually very new. So new, in fact, that in the area where I lived, virtually all the apartments were empty. It was a ghost town. | Below it was one of those typical park constructions in China. Again, it looked nice, but didn't serve much of a purpose. These building are essentially just there for people to take selfies, nowadays. (I suppose, the actual purpose is to offer people some relaxing time in "nature", but I don't see how that is possible with all those people around [in other places, not in Beilun at the time, luckily].) | Darunter lag eine der chinatypischen Parkkonstruktionen. Sah auch recht nett aus, aber dient eigentlich nur als Selfie-Hintergrund. | Anyway, I was far from impressed by my first impressions. Back then, there wasn't even a proper supermarket in Beilun. The next big one was Carrefour in Ningbo proper, 90 minutes by bus. | Ich war jedenfalls von meinen ersten Eindrücken nicht sehr beeindruckt.
