REM - Review & Open Discussion
This was our first ever short film that Chris and I made back in May. There was a lot that we had learned from this on the filmmaking aspect side of things. One of the biggest obstacles believe it or not was shooting in the dark. I did not realize how much external light you need when shooting this until we go to the shoot. If you increase the ISO so high it will produce those grainy images you see in old school videos. It took us about 3 days of filming this short.
The first day was dedicated going over the equipment and we did not have a lot of equipment. Just a couple of video lights, shotgun mic, and a cheap DSLR camera.
The second day was the first day of actual filming. My whole thought process was to go for a Birdman type film where they hide all the camera cuts and make it look like it is in one shot for the first half of the film. I was going for a Point of view from the demon/ghost. I did not know how hard this would be for a first film because as you progress through our youtube channel you can see how we have increased our quality of our films marginally.
The third and final day was going through and finishing up shots that were not any good and smoothing out any details and there were quite a few kinks that needed working out. When we were viewing raw footage on the camera it looks fine but once you pull it up on a bigger screen. You can definitely see the flaws. So maybe having a bigger monitor to view the footage playback could have cut down a lot more time and helped us figure out the problems on the spot rather than spending the extra day shooting.
Overall, this was an a great learning project and there were definitely a lot of laughs from Brandon, Ryan, Chris, Leo and Lisa. Not the greatest piece ever but it was definitely a stepping stone and something that I could say hey we finished a project rather then saying "I want to make a movie". Just pick up a camera and start shooting.
