In Greek mythology, Dionysus was also revered as the god of wine and joy and he was strongly revered in ancient Greece and a huge cult has emerged around him which has been strongly linked to mysteries. He was also often associated as a god with fertility or ecstasy and his typical symbol were grapes and in Roman mythology Bacchus is regarded as his equivalent and he has gained huge importance in visual arts and can be found in numerous works of art and has helped to shape some important art epochs. Over time, his meaning has changed greatly and in original times he was considered even more as the god of fertility or life and later he was also associated with drunkenness or wine and he was considered a mysterious deity of which the origin is not completely clarified and according to some interpretations, his father is Zeus and the mother is not entire clear and there are also some views that Dionysus once came from Asia Minor and traveled a lot and only later came to Greece and among the gods, he is also considered one of the youngest. There are different legends that revolve around his birth and in some there is the view that Semele was the mother who secretly brought him into to the world and according to another legend turned Zeus into a snake to be able to approach Persephone to father the child with her and there are many other legends that revolve around the origin and it is suspected that he did not had an easy childhood. In rural areas, he was also very revered by the farmers who thought that he could help to improve the wine harvest and in his honor, numerous festivities were often celebrated in which the joy was in the foreground and it was about drinking a lot of wine and his cult was about celebrating various rituals that are considered very mysterious. He himself as a God was known to have been often accompanied by others and even though he was considered one of the youngest gods, he has achieved great popularity and is considered one of the best-known gods from Greek mythology and in these pictures, I have also selected pictures of works of art which are associated with him in addition to the wine plant.
