Elephant's Ears (Bergenia)

in #photographylast year

Hey dear Hive community, I hope you had a pleasant day which was full of positive experiences and would like to welcome you to my post new post! Today I present you a plant a little closer and hope you like my pictures and can learn something new!

You can see here a plant that originally comes from the Asian region and bears the common name Elephant's Ears and scientifically Bergenia. The name of the genus was created in 1794 by the physicist and botanist Karl August and the genus includes 7-15 different species, the species that can be seen in my pictures is probably bergenia cordifolia. In the wild form, they are mainly distributed in mountain regions of Asia and mainly cultivated hybrid varieties are used as ornamental plants.

Flowering period begins relatively early from about March and Bergenias are in itself considered relatively easy to care plants and do not have great demands on the soil or location. The flowers not only look wonderful and convince with their strong pink color, they are also very friendly to insects, especially for bees, bumblebees or butterflies and a great addition to gardens! Depending on the species, Bergenia can grow between 20-60 cm high and is also a hardy plant, but you have to be careful when watering and waterlogging should be avoided!

Bergenias are not poisonous in themselves and can even be used as a medicinal plant and research in the medical field still leaves room for improvement. In Asia, it is used in folk medicine and the leaves contain the active ingredients arbutin, hydrochinone, gallic acid and tannins. In general, it can have a positive effect on the immune system and help against inflammation, the area of application is large and can also be used against migraines, wounds or stabilization of blood pressure and more. As always, you should ask your doctor about the correct application, dosage and possible side effects!
