Greek Mythology - Small Demeter Sculpture

in #photography11 months ago

Good day dear Hive community, as always I hope everyone is doing well and would like to welcome every reader to my new post! Today I would like to write something about Greek mythology and present a work of art of a goddess.

This small statue, which can be seen here, presents the goddess Demeter, who is also revered as the goddess of fertility and agriculture and is often depicted with cereals, poppy or fruits. The small but very authentic looking figure was made of alabaster and is of course not as magnificent as a life-size sculpture, but an enrichment and a great ornament for mythology inspired.

Her counterpart from Roman mythology is Ceres and she is also associated with the same attributes and often symbolized with cereals. By the way, the first large mills, which were able to produce fine flour, also come from ancient Rome. Maybe I will write a little bit more about the history of the mills in one of my future contributions. In the Norse mythology, it is the goddess Freyr who is associated with fertility and the harvest.

Back to Demeter, she is the daughter of the titan Kronos and Rhea and her three brothers are Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The two sisters of Demeter are Hera and Hestia and she was very revered and often celebrated in ancient Greece. At that time, animals were often sacrificed for her and she had her own festival, which was celebrated annually in honor of her.

It was also believed that Demeter was able to influence the seasons and she was responsible for the growth of plants. Eleusis, today's Elefsina is one of her most important places of worship and Eleusis is generally a mysterious place that can also be associated with the entrance to the underworld. Demeter also had its own temple, which is located on the island of Naxos and is also called the Temple of Sangri.
