Walking through the forest at our weekend retreat, the path was littered with little black bugs.
Upon further investigation they looks to be African Black Beetles ,the latin name being Heteronychus arator

Didn't you accidentally see one of these insects carrying a little clay ball with its back extensions?
It is very similar to the so-called "dung beetle".
