This past weekend was very gray but, with dense freezing fog, it made for some beautiful sightseeing. The fog freezes slowly, creating beautiful crystals on tree branches and leaves that are much larger than snowflakes.
Frosted Forest
Freezing fog is rare here, but something I have seen quite a few times. This is the first time I was able to find a still-clinging leaf rimmed with frost like the salt on the rim of a margarita, though.
Salty Rim?
WIth fog still heavy in patches, the farm fields seemed to disappear into nothing. This next photo was taken at the edge of one of those fields. As I was leaving this one, a farm dog decided to run up and chase my vehicle. He's lucky I saw him before he leapt out into the road!
The Edge of Nothing
This next one is the best macro I was able to pull off, with the slight breeze wiggling the branches and the cold numbing my chilled hands. They have no circulation in cold weather, as a result of a bad case of frostbite when I was a kid.

Really Cold Cotton Candy
Even my town of Mankato looked prettier in the frost. Coming back into town, I decided to take a photo from the top of a parking garage in the downtown area. The fancy building at the top left is Mankato's old courthouse, which keeps watch over the downtown from its perch half-way up the bluffs.

After that, it was time to head home and find a way to warm my hands back up...

What a beautiful post! Excellent photos. That fog must have covered the a huge part of the upper Midwest! I love the frosty shot of Mankato and the macros are delightful.
Thanks! We weren't actually supposed to have the dense fog. It was supposed to stay south and west of us, but we ended up with an entire weekend under it. It may be gloomy, but I'm not complaining.
I would be in for some of that hand warming device after a walk in all that nice frost! Well done. It does leave a special finish on every surface with all the fluffy crystal.
Working in refineries near large water cooling units, our sites gets it's own conditions and everything gets covered in that freezing mist. I got my new cam btw.

I have a Canon RP right now and am waiting for the rumored "high resolution" one to come out this year for a new main camera. I'll have to replace some lenses, too, but that can be done over time.
I have the Nikon z6 no it's not really set up, I have been lazy and didn't even read the manual yet, but we can't really go anywhere. I did test it a bit...it's so great!! I'm using my old lenses and an adaptor for now but I do plan on upgrading them in time too if I like this tech.
Already camera shopping again!! Sometimes it's tough waiting for a tech to come out. Replacing lenses is a fact of photography life, it's always so expensive too. Your pretty happy with Canon eh?
I like a lot of what Canon has to offer, but did consider all the options. The first SLR I ever bought was a Nikon FM-10 but I switched to Canon for the 7D. The Fujifilm cameras look like a lot of fun, but they don't have full frame and the GFX line is beyond my budget.
The new Nikon mirrorless look like fun, too. A friend got the Z50 and loves it. The Z6 sounds like a very capable camera. How is it handling in cold weather?
I don't know yet, it's been fairly mild so far this winter the odd year Edmonton gets chinooks but the cold is coming so I'll find out soon enough. I did do a bit of a quick shoot for a friend the other day, it's nice so far.

lol thanks. A couple of years ago, I was able to get a really close macro of an ice crystal that was a centimeter long. They weren't quite that large this time around, but it still makes for some chilly scenery.

Oh stabilized macro lens would sure be nice, even though it's been so windy here last few days, that even using a tripod makes focusing pretty hard. (was trying to catch some insects on leaves).
That is pretty tricky, especially with the wind blowing things around. They seem more lethargic in the morning, but they're definitely trickly.
