Cape Town What's Up?!

Summer in cape town. Hard to beat. Long, hot days looked over by the iconic Table Mountain.

A series of concerts has popped up over the last few years called Concerts in the Park, situated in the heart of city, in De Waal Park. These concerts are free for anyone who wants to come, and over the last few years they have grown from a small "Bring Your Own" picnic, to a fully fledged festival with stalls selling food and drink.

I arrived with my band in the early morning for soundcheck and had some photos snapped of us warming up and hanging out.

Greasin' the Groove

The lineup for this Sunday's gig was: Freshly Ground, my very own The Rudimentals, and a group of laaitjies (young ones) called Skyscraper Band.

Look at those big smiles!!!

This group of kids take to the stage and perform with a technical aptitude and flair for stage-craft that belies their age.

I gotta focus on the singer though, cause she's just great!
Mila is maybe 12 years old and she's got the pipes of someone who's been singing since exiting the womb. Her attitude is effervescent and she's totally at ease on stage in front of the crowd of about two thousand. Most of the notes she hit were on point and she was an absolute natural on the microphone.

Pipes!

She had a great way with her fans, mingling with them after the show.

One of the vocalists invited a woman on stage and proceeded to melt her heart on a love song...

The headliners for the afternoon were South African music stalwarts, Freshly Ground, who although having been quite quiet on the local scene for some time, still put on a great show and even blessed us with some new tunes which sounded great!

Zolani, the lead vocalist, is always great and she didn't disappoint this time. She's a little firecracker that takes me to the bottom of my shoulder if that, but on stage she is dynamite, and well loved by the people.

Good on ya ma'am!

But as much as the bands bough swagger and style, sometimes you just can't beat how styling audience members in South Africa can be...

You gotta love the mother city sometimes.
