Chocó is a Colombia province located between the Western mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It's a region with very high precipitation which allows having an exuberant vegetation and biodiversity.
This region is not well developed, you cannot go by car. The only options are taking a small plane from Medellín (1 hour) or by ship (more than 10 hours from Buenaventura depending on your final destination and the ship speed). The 2 main destinations are Nuqui and Bahía Solano. You can stay in Bahía Solano but I went to the small village called El Valle (1 hour from there). El Valle has 2 kind of beaches: The North part is rocky and close to the mountains, you can see there different waterfalls and find natural pools in the slopes. On the South, the beach is sandy and flat. On the South side there are less hostals and tourists.
The best time to visit is between July and October when the humpback whales come to the Colombian Pacific for giving birth and mate again. Besides watching whales it's also possible to go hiking, visit Amerindians communities, go to the Utria National Park, or discover new places by boat.
This is recommended trip for those wanting to go out of the beaten path. Enjoy!

El Chocó es un departamento de Colombia que se encuentra ubicado entre la cordillera Occidental y el Océano Pacífico. Es una región con un alto volumen de lluvias lo cual da origen a una vegetación exuberante y a una gran biodiversidad.
Es una zona poca desarrollada a la cual no se puede llegar en vehículo, las opciones son tomar un avión pequeño (1 hora desde Medellín) o en barco (según me dicen más de 10 horas desde Buenaventura, dependiendo del destino final y del tipo de embarcación). Los 2 principales destinos son Nuqui y Bahía Solano. Aunque es posible quedarse en Bahia Solano, yo me fui al corregimiento del Valle que queda a 1 hora y que tiene 2 tipos de playa: al Norte es rocosa con las montañas muy cerca lo cual permite apreciar muchas cascadas y encontrar piscinas naturales en la montaña!; al Sur es principalmente arenosa y plana. En el lado sur hay menos hostales y turistas.
La mejor época para visitar es durante el periodo de avistamiento de ballenas. Las ballenas jorobadas llegan al Pacífico colombiano entre Julio y Octubre para dar a luz y reproducirse nuevamente. Aparte de los tours para ir a ver ballenas, también es posible hacer caminatas de playa y montaña, visitar las comunidades indígenas de los alrededores, ir al Parque nacional de Utría, recorridos en lancha.
Es un paseo recomendado a todos aquello que quieren hacer algo diferente a lo usual. Que lo disfruten!
