A week ago, I have conveyed a news that Canon will announce their new FF model on February 14th — and they did it. And finally we have some seriously good news…

No, the specs list is not changed, but we have the price tag now. And it is the most pleasent surprise — with the price tag of $1300 body-only, Canon EOS RP is by far the most affordable FF camera so far! And not even pretty poor battery life of 250 shots per charge cannot ruin that impression. Hear what dPreview has as a preliminary conclusion:

It’s less ambitious than the EOS R but by combining twin command dials with the excellent Feature Assist interface and a really keen price tag, it ends up looking rather charming.

Now they are talking! For that price we can look into the details of the Canon EOS RP.

Well, camera bodies come and go, no matter how seductive they can be. They simply get old. Technological age lasts 5-10 years at most. There is one much more important thing — the glass!

And Canon has announced six new RF lenses in 2019. They are using technological advantage of short flange focal distance of only 20mm, to introduce some real novelties:

  • The RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM — long-range zoom, the ideal lens for amateurs and advanced amateurs who love to travel, no matter the destination. The versatile, all-purpose lens offers a range of focal lengths for capturing extraordinary shots in a form factor that is both compact and lightweight.
  • The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM is a large aperture mid-telephoto prime lens. It offers excellent performance for advanced and professional portrait photographers and is a widely popular focal length and aperture speed combination for users.
  • The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS, with Defocus Smoothing lens technology, is a uniquely designed lens that offers a combination of beautifully smooth defocused bokeh. Featuring a super-fast F1.2 aperture, the lens will help produce breathtaking portraits that will surely stand out from the crowd.
  • The RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is a high-performance, standard zoom lens for professionals and photo enthusiasts alike – ideal for shooting portraits, landscapes, documentaries or weddings.
  • The RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM, offering a wide angle and fast aperture in a single package, is ideal for a variety of shooting applications including architecture, interiors or landscapes.
  • The RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM is a must-have for any professional photographer, especially for those shooting weddings, sports or wildlife. This lens is a great all-around, high-speed, medium telephoto zoom lens and does well to round out any camera bag.

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS, with Defocus Smoothing shows that Canon has watching over the Fujifilm’s shoulder in developing Fujinon XF 56mm 1.2 APO lens… which is good. And the last one, pro lens, RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM, is miraculously short comparing to the EF versions, or with a competing lenses for the FF DSLR cameras.

Sony had 5 or 6 iterations till they got it right, to the models A7III and A9… Canon will certainly make a decent body in the next 10 years. Just in time when we earn enough steem for one of those fine lenses :)

Canon again! The King of impossibly low prices. I'm only a bit sorry that they have dedicated IS and non-IS lenses and they will probably never make built-in IBISS.

Interesting, I've been thinking about changing my camera for a Canon R, but at the moment I could only buy the body and the adapter. However I am concerned if the quality will be affected by using my EF and EF-S lenses.

EF-s would vignette adapted on EOS R, but EF lenses work perfectly, @photographercr.

I think you mean the 70-200 not 24-70.
A7ii goes for 999$.

You are right @sulev, I don’t know how it slipped on my keyboard ;) Thanks

Yes, but it is an old model. It wasn’t $1300 before A7III was announced :)

Always loved Canon, always will! Even though I love and use my other gear often too, the Canon gear stays my trusted gear.
