Ciao a tutti,
questo è un viaggio attraverso l'Italia. Posterò una foto al giorno con una brevissima descrizione. Spero vi piaccia!

Maruggio è un piccolo borgo in provincia di Taranto, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. Si trova ai piedi della Murgia Tarantina, nel nord-ovest del Salento.

Maruggio fu fondata da Gorgolano, governatore dell'imperatore bizantino Niceforo Foca, con l'unione delle antiche frazioni di Castigno, Olivaro, Albano, Roselle e San Nicolò. Dopo fu' governata dal 1317 al 1819 dai Cavalieri di Malta. Poi, nel 1819, divenne un comune libero. Durante la sua storia è stato attaccata dai Saraceni che però la distrussero solo una volta, senza provocare morti nei loro attacchi.

Il coinvolgimento della città con l'Ordine dei Cavalieri Templari è leggendario ed è illustrato dalla Chiesa della Madonna della Verde o Santa Maria dei Tempi che sono di indubbia origine templare. Il Castello dei Cavalieri di Malta, la Chiesa della Matrice (dedicata alla Natività della Vergine Maria) e il Convento, con le sue stalle, le lunette e gli affreschi insieme alla Chiesa di San Giovanni fuori le mura. La torre e le mura medievali che circondano il borgo, per non parlare dei numerosi palazzi con il loro relativo stemma di nobiltà. Tutti questi sono testimoni silenziosi ed eterni di un passato di importanza strategica.

Il Palazzo Commendatori è uno degli edifici più antichi del paese, mentre la Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie fu costruita nel XVI secolo in stile romanico. Merita una visita la Chiesa di Sant'Eligio e dell'Annunziata.

La bellezza del villaggio non si limita al suo centro storico. Fuori dal paese, la bellezza della natura prende il sopravvento con il suo mare cristallino e le sue alte duna di sabbia, protette dalla creazione del Parco delle Dune di Campomarino, Sito di interesse comunitario.

Maruggio is a small village in the province of Taranto, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is located at the foot of the Taranto Murgia, in the north-west of Salento.

Maruggio was founded by Gorgolano, a governor of the Byzantine emperor Niceforo Foca, with the union from the ancient hamlets of Castigno, Olivaro, Albano, Roselle and San Nicolò. After it was governed since 1317 to 1819 from the Knights of Malta. Then, in 1819, it became a free common. During its history it has been attacked by Saracens that however destroyed it only once, but no one died in their attacks.

The town’s involvement with the Knights Templar Order is legendary and is illustrated by the Church of the Madonna della Verde or Santa Maria dei Tempio that are of undoubted Templar origin. The Castle of the Cavaliers of Malta, the Matrix Church (dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) and the Convent, with it’s stalls, fanlights, and fresco’s together with the Church of San Giovanni outside the wall. The tower and mediaeval wall that surround, not to mention the numerous palaces with their relative coat of arms of nobility. All of these stand as silent and eternal witnesses to a passage of time of strategic importance.

The Commendatori Palace is one of the oldest buildings in the country, while the Church of Our Lady of Graces was built in the XVI century in Romanesque style. Worth a visit the Church of Saint Eligius and of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

The beauty of the village is not limited to it historic centre. Outside the village, the beauty of nature takes over with its crystal-clear sea and its tall sand dune, protected by the creation of the Park of the Dunes of Campomarino, Site of Community Interest.
