@janton asked me an interesting question the other day about whether there were any ‘ugly’ places in the UK as everything seems so picturesque (to him).
While it is very true that the UK is very photogenic and has some wondeful places. The most obvious answer to his interesting question is that people. I assume, try to post their best results from any particular photo opportunity.
But in the interests of balance and full transparency just to prove that things often do not work out the way we expect. More often than not, most photo opportunities end in failure rather than success in terms of usuable content.
Here is a short behind the scenes look at what happens when things don’t quite work out.
This is what happened on Wednesday but never made it into a post…until today.
So, it was last Wednesday and that meant taking a photo walk. I had to go into Huntingdon to get a birthday present for someone very special and parked my car on the roof of the local supermarket. (it has a parking area on the roof) 😉
As I got out of the car, I saw some Crows and Ravens on the parapet wall of the car park and then ensued my stalk.
I had my 30 mm camera lens on the camera which is great for tight close ups and for wide open spaces. For middle distance shots like this. It is not so good and the bird was 20 feet away so this was going to be tricky.
Animals are very difficult to photograph as they are constantly on alert for threats and take off when disturbed. Crows are particulary smart apparently.
Crow at 12 o’clock

Creeping slowly across the car park keeping the crow in the shot and getting a little closer with every step. Will I get that shot?
Stalking a Crow

Another few steps and another few photos and the bird is starting to take notice of me.
The Crow is watching me now?

Crow is getting twitchy at my antics

Crow has its beady eye on me now

As I got closer to the Crow it just walked away to the other side of the chimney stack and any chance of a decent photo were gone

If I had managed to get close enough to the Crow to get a decent photo. Then all of the above photo’s above would have been dumped into the trash bin as unusable and out of focus. But as an illustration of what usually doesn't get published in my feed it serves a purpose.
So, to answer @janton’s question. There must be literally billions of photographs that do not get uploaded every day or maybe I’m wrong and people just post any old crap they come across?
If you have something to Crow about then this is a great place to share your ideas. @janton's question was very interesting and goes to the root of 'why' do people post what they do?
Do you prefer ugly or pretty?
What do you think?

I like this series of photos! The clouds and the rooftops are quite lovely, not to mention that beautiful wary crow! I think you would have to get uglier than this to prove your point!
Thanks Melinda, the clouds do look nice with that little patch of blue amongst the greyness and white. The Crow was on to me as soon as I started creeping up on it lol
I cool way to make your point and its the same for me, I may take many shots to get the one that I want and share, and for taking photos we are often drawn tot he nicer side of life
Yep this is the experience of most of us I assume. We may take 1000's of photos that will never see publication and the weird thing is that we sometimes get lucky.
I recall someone saying to me years ago that for every hour of video that we film we may get 1 minute that is usable. I suppose the same applies to photography?
We only post what we feel are our best images of the nicer side of life as you say. Who wants to see ugly? We can watch the mainsteam for that lol
Well I avoid the mainstrean a lot to avoid ugly to be honest LOL, but thats the way it is, I do sometimes try to get images of the darker side but ones that perhaps make it look better than it is, such as my Art of trash posts I do randomly
I just realized i misread what you were saying on the other post I did realize the other account was yours
Not to worry I get mixed with two accounts as well and I run them lol
I struggle to keep up with one account let alone two LOL
Pretty! Only Pretty!

I'm all in for the pretty too. 😉
I wonder, if Mr. Crow would have his blog, what would he write 😄

That's a great question, why not try writing it? 😉 You could be the new Kafka! 😄
LOL

@molometer, Specially those Bricks reflecting the strong effect and this picture is storytelling and i want to give a Title to this picture and that is The Solo Bird.

I like it. Great title
Thank you. Have a great time ahead. 👍
That’s hilarious @molometer.

This crow like to drink out of muddy water.
Looks like drinking muddy water is a good idea if Crows drink it. They are so smart? 😉
May not be that close but still makes a neat picture of the crow with the brooding clouds overhead.
Thanks Mike, I didn't even think about it that way but you are right?
Thanks Mike, I didn't
Even think about it that
Way but you are right?

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.
Howdy sir molometer! well, I don't know if this is real ugly or not although it isn't a thing of beauty or wouldn't be for most people, especially with the standards that we have on steemit! lol. But it sure COULD have been a thing of beauty if that crow had cooperated.
Those birds are SO smart and wary! But your situation also brings up the point of the parking lot on top of a grocery store which I've never heard of. Is that common in England? I'd think getting the carts down to the store level would be quite a hassle. Is there an elevator I assume?
So the photos are interesting and a little stark but I don't know if I can call them ugly. Do you have anything uglier to prove that England has ugly areas? lol. Or maybe there ARE no super ugly areas in your town! I think this is a great post though sir, thanks so much for the mentions and illustrations.
My pleasure and it's always nice to think about what we are doing and why. Most people never see the work that goes into getting a decent photo.
They must think they all appear by magic. It takes work and time to get good photos and as for the 'standards' on here I couldn't possible comment haha as it is all rather subjective.
As to finding ugly things to photograph? I have no interest in that whatsoever. There is enough ugly in the world already and I don't feel the need to share it but thanks for the input it was interesting to show how not to do it.
Rooftop car parks are rare and yep, it does have a lift.
Howdy again sir molometer! oh ok, that was ugly enough then! Yes I know the time and effort and work put in by you more serious photographers and it's just amazing what it takes but hopefully soon it will be very good pay for your time invested!
I think it will be anyway, hopefully we'll know this year.
thanks again for that post, it was very intertaining and informative!
Haha yes I agree,
And for the money that I've already invested in steem!?
We have all taken a bath on steem this year. Hopefully it will recover...some day?
Yes sir, from everything I've read I think it should start moving up this year, perhaps significantly but then like you said, predicting the future is a fools errand! lol. I'll put it this way: I would be surprised if it didn't move upward significantly this year. The institutional money is still waiting on the sidelines getting ready to come in.
beautiful photography.... weather, cloud and bird overall nice. thanks to share.
Thank you shuvo35.
