The hunt goes on

in #photography8 years ago

No matter how hot it is, the dragonflies are out hunting.

I wish they would hunt in the shade more, were the mosquitos are, but you can't have everything, I suppose.

This short and stocky dragonfly I saw the other day is called a broad-bodied chaser (Libellula depressa), platbuik in Dutch, meaning "flatbelly":

Don't let its looks fool you: this is a very alert and agile hunter!

A bit later in the day, there were some black-tailed skimmers (Orthetrum cancellatum), gewone oeverlibel in Dutch, sitting around a pool on the lookout for prey:

To my delight, they did manage to kill some mosquitos.

Thanks for watching!

You nailed the focus on the first one, great job :)

Thank you.

I'll continue upvoting you once my voting power comes back a bit. :D

Thanks. I have the same problem, it's on life support.

I wish there was a better way to watch our voting power, other than steemstats.com. Like a meter in the corner of our screen.

I would like that as well.

Mine too... Drastically dropped

Yeah these dragonflies are great to get rid of mosquitos. I love your camera btw :)

Cool shots, love the macro!

Very nice catch! :)

Thanks! I did a bit of friendly hunting myself.

A good hunt allways is hard work

Any creature that kills mosquitoes is a friend to all of us.

Indeed. Dragonflies and damselflies don't think my bedroom is a suitable habitat, though.

Very nice, it really is wide!

It may look less elegant than most dragonflies, but it is quite an athlete.

Is there a chance you could capture the killing?! :P

I tried, but they are extremely quick about it and it often happens at a fair distance from where they are sitting. I have a few shots of them eating, but they are gross. They are very sloppy eaters ...

Its beautiful!!I love photography as well.but ur clicks are awesome, buddy

@ocrdu Your photos are so good you could get money for them..... Ohh ... but you do with steemit...Well deserved..

Thanks! I do sell them on the side as well sometimes, as signed prints, but only the really arty-farty ones 8-).

It is female I suppose.
Shade is good for photographer, but not for the photo. I am still surprised how mighty is the digital technology, but IMO is still valid that good light is irreplaceable.

Both are females, both species' males are blue.

Film still covers contrasts in light better, I think, but I rarely shoot film anymore. There is also B&W film I used sometimes that makes 50MP look ridiculous, but it is quite a bit more work to process, and I am lazy sometimes.

I LOVE THSI!!!

Glad you like it! There are plenty more dragonfly photos in my blog.

Amazing photos!

Thank you!

Hey ocrdu , great photo, If you like check my posts too, thanks.

Sometimes I think the hotter it is the more they enjoy the hunt!
I don't think I have see a "flatbelly" like that...

They are a bit strange, but quite common in The Netherlands.

Should pay more attention when I am in Poland next time then.
We should have them there too I guess...

The books say it is native in Poland as well. Note that the male is blue, makes searching easier 8-).

Oh that is good to know! I saw some small ones in a pond near me... maybe there are other ones there too.
Thanks a lot :)

Excellent photos.Keep up the good work!

Thanks.
