Adventures in Antarctica

A few years ago I was commissioned to travel to Antarctica with an expedition company, the brief was "travel to Antarctica, have an adventure, go snorkelling, kayaking, hiking, swimming and camping... take photos while you are there too". Definitely my favourite type of project!

antarctica2.jpg

My journey started at home in the South West of Western Australia, I drove the 3 hours to Perth, Western Australia, boarded my first of many flights. I watched the sun rise Sunday morning as I departed Perth, then watched the sun set Sunday afternoon in Auckland, New Zealand, where I boarded my next flight to Santiago in Chile. While on that flight, I watched the sun rise... Sunday morning and then had dinner in Santiago and watched the sun set for the second time Sunday afternoon... it got a bit confusing to say the least. From Santiago I flew to Punta Arenas and then on to Puerto Williams where I boarded the Polar Pioneer, a Russian icebreaker.

I spent quite some time in Antarctica, we explored mostly the Antarctic Peninsular, visiting many islands, bays, old whaling stations and a research station, we even camped out under the clear night skies at one point. Here are some photos from the trip.

The snorkelling and swimming were a little bit crazy, but an awesome experience none the less! I managed to kill 3 cameras while snorkelling, the ice cold water was just too much for the two GoPros and it managed to freeze the O Ring on my underwater housing for my Canon 7D, flooding the housing and killing the camera. So I have 3 photos from underwater in Antarctica and none of them are worth showing.

Probably my favourite part was the kayaking, making our way through pancake ice, breaking up the surface as we pushed further and further out, the sound is beyond incredible.

I'll post some more photos in future posts, possibly with some further stories as well.

Thanks for checking out my photos.

What an incredible adventure! Something not many people get to do. I can't imagine snorkeling in water that cold, though. I'm glad you brought lots of cameras....

The snorkelling was an incredible experience. You wear thermals, fleecy pants and top and then a dry suit over all of that, so only parts of your face get wet.

Ha! I bet it was worth all the effort!

Awesome shots man. I would love to go there on a photo expedition one day. I have always wanted to see penguins in the wild.

I'm working with another photographer to provide a guided photography tour of the very best parts of Antarctica at the moment.

I hope one day I can visit Antarctica and it still has glaciers, btw awesome pictures

Some of the glaciers have very heavy aircraft land on them and use them as runways as they are over several miles thick... I think you've got some time to get there :)

I hope so 😊

Even though I'm heavily against tourism industry touching Antarctica, I must admit that it must have been one hell of an experience. Still one of my dreamy utopic places to go live for some time on a sailboat.

Thanks for sharing.

There are insane restrictions on the numbers of people that can visit, the numbers of people that can go ashore from the ship, they have to scrub and decontaminate boots, pants etc. The environmental restrictions and regulations are very good, there are some places that they are not allowed on land at all. The tourism industry has its place in educating people about the pristine environment of Antarctica, it will always remain too expensive for there to be massive crowds of people visiting.

The cheapest way to to do it is on one of the giant cruise ships, but you are unlikely to be allowed ashore if you go on one of those ships due to the number restrictions, so their impact is pretty close to non-existent. I went on a small Russian icebreaker, there were only 48 guests and we were split in to smaller groups and taken ashore via zodiacs, our impact was a few footprints at the most.

Thank god, but I'd feel really disappointed being there alone on my sailboat and a huge steel ship passes by. I reckon Amyr Klink talking about Antarctica and how just a few sailboats, mostly French, going there. Conditions were brutal years ago compared to today according to him, that openned up more windows of opportunity for more people to go.

It would depend one which part of Antarctica you went to, but none of it is particularly busy. I saw 3 sail boats and the Chilean Navy and that was it.

@uncommonriad just wondering if there was a specific reason you down voted? I'm not asking you to remove it at all, I'm just new to steem and wondering what I could have done better or differently for you to either not vote or up vote? Have a great day.
