Blue Morpho Butterfly

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

Aka Morpho peleidies, these blue butterflies are beautiful but made for tough subjects. They were very flighty and didn't want to sit down for too long. After waiting a while this one with wings in good shape decided to bask on some stones. Click the image for high-res 3.7MB JPEG!

Another one was resting on a flower.

Click the above image for the high-res 1.8MB JPEG! You can see little hairs coming out of its eyes!

Butterfly wings deteriorate as they age, this one wasn't long for the world. Focusing was tough but you can make out the little scales that make up the colorful parts of the wing. It uses the contrast of bright blue and darker brownish scales (including eye patterns) on the opposite side as a defense against predators. When it flaps its wings it appears to flash and dazzles them.

Makes me think of my grandma. She has a pretty cool butterfly collection. Some from south america, and a few from China, and africa. It always made me sad that they killed the butterfly's to put them on display though. When I was little I would tell her she should collect butterfly's that were still alive ha ha.

I cannot believe you were able to get these shots. I've been trying to capture the various butterflies but they don't stay still long enough!
I never imagined that they would be fuzzy little creatures.

I was surprised by all the fur too.

Wonderful details, haha I didn't know they had little hairs ON their eyes!
Great macros :)

That was also a surprise when I was editing, wow!

Thanks!

Superb set of photographs ~ Instant upvote and follow. Only natural to love the beauty of the intact iridescent blue wings, but the image that really drew my attention was the last one ~ The more abstract design of wings in tatters.

Thanks! I wish I had got a better focused shot of the wings, but it was very tough because I was about as close as I could focus, and the depth of field was very low. Here is another shot of tattered wings

Love the composition of this image too. For myself I'm a bit of a 'perfectionist' and up until a few years ago mainly gravitated to the perfection in nature ~ Still do, but I now have an appreciation of nature in tatters as well. Brings about more of a balance in one's own life ~ Noting the cycles of birth, maturation and death in nature.

Beautiful but looks dangerous and scary from up close. Really like the vein like shapes within the wings, it looks more like a skeleton inside the wings.

Stunning!

That level of detail is a joke! You are one exceptionally talented photographer. Automatic upvote and follow. Very well done.

Thanks ezzy!

@kus-knee (The Old Dog)

Sick Dude! I have tried with that type of butterfly but have had super cruddy results. Good Job!

Thanks Jason :)

What a glorious creature! That's some excellent macro, @pfunk!

Thanks Sara :)

What wonderful photos! I first saw blue morpho butterflies while staying at a reserve on the coast of Ecuador. It was also the first place I heard howler monkeys, so it was pretty special.

Thank you very much! They are very eye-catching. A camera can't quite capture it.

What kind of lense do you use? Wow!!
