The Tower

in #photography9 years ago

Click to view in your browser's neutral gray field for maximum effect. Created with Lightroom and Photoshop. Photostitch, multiple exposures shot at ISO 12800 handheld at f/4 with the moon behind the clouds. I saw this tower in a new light and knew I had to go for the grainy black and white film look. Lots of pushing and dodging just like the old days :)

Awesome ...looks totally Dark and Evil for sure.

Yes! Effect achieved. Thanks for the feedback.

Woah, @pfunk, the tone set in this image is super ominous. You captured the shadows so very well in this photograph. The light to dark effect you caught is powerfully observed here. Great photograph!

Thank you :)

Handheld! Nice! I really like the drama behind this image. The lighting and clouds were just right for this one. I like grain on my images, even if they come out tack sharp, i would add a nice amount of grain to give it some texture.

Thank you. At high ISO 1/50th of a second at f/4 was possible. Still had to dodge and burn and perform other sorcerer's tricks.

You've done WELL! hahaha. Yes, sometimes we must cast a couple spells to make things work for the image. I hate it when I photograph a 'perfect' shot, but my exposure was waay off, then I would really have to lay down the skills to keep that image alive! lol

This reminds me of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, which incidentally I highly reccomend. I believe there is a movie being made about it also

The knight figures surrounding it definitely make it fit in with the dark fantasy genre.

Great shot. I love the shadow-line cut by the swordsman (on center). Also nice work pulling the clouds into the mix with multiple exposures...!

Thanks! The multiple exposures was actually just to get the whole scene into view. I was at the 24mm end of my lens but still needed to go wider. Every shot was 1/50th of a second f/4 at ISO 12800, then stitched/merged in Photoshop. I probably went between Photoshop and Lightroom 10 times for this one photo.

Nice. I like the old film look. Here there is an ominous feel like the world is going to end or something. What are the statues on the tower? They look like they could come to life?

Thanks

They're one sorcerer's spell away from life, easily.

Dude, the black and white styling makes this a very striking photo. I also like how the clouds look a little "noisy" with the contrast of the sharp edges of the tower.

Can't wait until I get my camera and get to start having some fun.

Thank you very much. You could probably make an image like this with your phone though! Better cameras open up more options but this photo really was made in software with just the grainy original photo files to start with as the source material.

Spooky

Super cool man, I love the composition and the dark eeriness of it!

Thank you @dexter-k, I always appreciate praise from the good photographers around here.

Great effect. Just lovely

Thank you :)

Great effect. Just lovely

I love that the clouds are big 'fluffy' ones and look real, as I personally find the lines that criss-cross our skies, pretending to be clouds, but don't fool anyone these days ~ Even the Italian pilots are now protesting against the chemical trails over Europe.

But back to your image ~ I LOVE it ~ The simplicity and yet enough detail to suggest the power of the protectors of the tower. And the atmosphere is indeed electric. Thanks for also sharing the technical details ~ SO 12800 and handheld. WOW.

Have only just started Steemit and have accrued the grand balance of 0.044 ~ As an experiment I just donated it all to promote your image. Also reblogging at Steemit, and sharing it on my FB Page for the work of other creatives.

Hey I just saw your replies. Thank you for all of your kind words and thanks for experimenting with the promotion on me :P I suggest holding on to your SBD in regards to the promotion feature. I don't think it's as useful as its competitive cost.

This looks great!

Love the mood in this and those solitary figures on each post. I was yesterday shooting at night and enjoying seeing new things that I don't normally focus on in day photography. I'll post a few of my pics soon.

Hey thanks for your comment. Nighttime photography is definitely different and sometimes more interesting. I love doing long (1m+) exposures.
