Family Made Cookies

We had a super-productive homeschooling day, and it was time for a reward and long-past time that Minime learns to bake and cook. We started by making some chaffle batter for future recipes and then moved on to some orange, dark-chocolate, and cream-cheese chip soft drop cookies. It wasn't the plan. I was going to make Christmas themed cookies but mixed up the orange extract with the vanilla. It was a happy accident; the cookies turned out super chewy and delicious and very low-carb.

It was rewarding to see Minime work around the kitchen and for him to have some ownership in what he eats. Then we moved back into Social Studies, nibbling away on our efforts.

Thw Council of Trent

From our studies ...

The Catholic Church had lost land, resources, and authority due to the Reformation, and from the perspective of true believers, the Church had lost souls.

There had been a lot of violence and thousands of lives lost, and also Church properties and icons were destroyed. Many Protestants believed that Catholics were worshiping idols and went about destroying these religious objects. The destroyers were known as iconoclasts ... destroyers of images.

John Calvin specifically spoke out against idolatry within Catholicism. Untold artistic works were destroyed in the idol purge, particularly in northern Europe.

Between 1545 and 1563, the Papacy held the Council of Trent to address the damage being done to the Catholic Church by the Reformation.

The Protestants declined to attend, and so there would be no reconciliation. The Catholic Church reaffirmed its doctrine, the importance of good works and contributions to the Church as a way to avoid time in purgatory. It doubled dow on transubstantiation and the hierarchy of the priesthood.

The Council of Trent reaffirmed, in direct contrast to the teachings of Luther, that the word of God (the Bible) and faith were not enough on their own to enter heaven. The Church also maintained attachment and veneration of religious idols and symbols. Catholic clergy argued that art was a way to teach Christianity and deepen the faith of the illiterate.

The Council of Trent led the Catholic Church to settle on 3 goals.

  • Reaffirm traditional doctrine
  • Campaign to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith throughout the world, including the New World.
  • To defeat heresy and Protestantism. The Church begins the Inquisition and creates the Index of Forbidden Books.

Ignaisus Loyola found the Jesuit Order. The Jesuits had complete faith in the Catholic Church and the Papacy. They opened schools and helped spread, along with colonialism, the Catholic faith throughout the world and they fought against Protestantism.

The spiritual battle between Catholicism and Protestantism would come to define the cultural and national divisions in both Europe and the New World. Most of northern Europe would convert to Protestantism, while southern Europe would remain Catholic. A similar phenomenon would occur in the Americas. South America and Mexico is predominantly Catholic, and for a time the United States and much of Canada was Protestant, of one sect or another. French-speaking Quebec however remained mostly Catholic.
