Rainy Days

Not much going on for us right now in rainy Vancouver. Not much fun to be outside but still essential to get out there and stretch out legs and breathe some ocean air, to breathe that salty hair while we still can. Likely the air with be arctic for us this time next year if our move goes as planned. Outside time will be accompanied by blades or planks on our feet. I am looking forward to learning how to cross-country ski.

With the weather so maudlin, we will likely renew our Vancouver Space Center membership soon. A planetarium movie is a great education escape for us.

Lord of Flies

So we will likely be heading to space later this week, but first we absolutely need to get some substantial homeschooling done. We continue to work for the Lord of the Flies and have moved onto chapter two. Nice to imaginary trip to the tropics.

From our studies ...

The boys in Lord of the Flies decided to maintain order at meetings when someone is speaking by having the speaker hold a conch shell. The island didn’t have any order because there were no adults. There were just kids on it. They needed a way to keep everyone from speaking at the same time and to make rules and plans for survival, until they were rescued. The conch gave them order, a way to be heard, and confidence and authority to the speaker.

The island in Lord of the Flies is full of mystery and unknown dangers, especially to the younger children. The six-year-old boy with a mulberry-coloured birthmark warned the other boys that he saw a big snake that might be able to eat them. Ralph doesn’t think there is a big snake because the island is too small for it, and that the boy with a mulberry birth mark had a nightmare where he confused vines with a snake. Still, the reader is left to wonder if there are dangerous snakes hiding in the shadows.

The island is remote and no one knows the boys are on it. Their best chance of getting rescued is to signal to a passing boat or plane. A signal has to be seen from far away because the boats and planes will likely be far away when they pass. Ralph’s plan was that the boys would light a fire on the top of the mountain. The crew of the passing boat or plane will see the smoke plume from the fire, investigate, and find the boys.

The island has limited resources, but it did have wood. Ralph and the boys gathered some old dead wood and made a pyre. The boys thought they might rub two sticks together. Then they realized they didn’t know how to start a fire. They asked if anyone had matches. No one did. They took Piggy’s glasses and used the lenses to magnify the sunlight. They did the best with the resources they had but hadn’t treated Piggy very well in the process.

The boys of the Lord of the Flies need dry wood for their signal fire. The side of the mountain caught fire where there was firewood. It was also where the six-year-old boy with the mulberry-coloured birthmark was playing. Piggy and the other boys worried that the little boy might have died in the fire. After only one day, they burnt down the side of the mountain, and their firewood, and one of the younger boys is missing and maybe dead. It doesn’t look good for the boys’ longterm survival on the island.

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is one of the most interesting and engaging fiction books I ever read. Though i don't like how everything on the island quickly fell to disorder and even murders were committed among the boys. That was a good review of the second chapter of the book. The pictures of the red flowers look amazing. Have an awesome day.

Thanks so much for you thoughtful comment.

All these plants and flowers that grow after the rains become more beautiful when the water washes over them and they become clean.

I actually love the images
