Despite its name this species is no longer considered a common butterfly.
It is still the most widespread in Britain, but many colonies of habitats such as walks in forests and farmland have reduced its population.
The males are very consistent in appearance, their wings are blue, with a gray background color with blue scales around the base of the wings and have very simple white stripes. Females vary in appearance considerably, always have orange-colored spots and greenish scales at the base of the wing. Some are almost devoid of blue, looking very much like the Argus Brown, while others are very sprinkled with blue scales.
