in #photography6 years ago (edited)

Ladakh in winter is all about the snow coated mountain peak, and frozen lakes and frozen river creating an endless streak of dreamlike frames.

When I landed in Leh it was -8 Degree Celsius. I visited Ladakh from January 23 to January 16 feb 2016. Most of the time the weather apps showed a temperature in minus. To sum it up winters in Ladakh are bitingly cold, there is no other way to describe it. The coldest that I saw with my own eyes was -25. Ladakh in winter is quiet, and The landscapes are surreal

The Indus River is the backbone of Ladakh. Most major historical and current towns — Shey, Leh, Basgo and Tingmosgang (but not Kargil), are close to the Indus River. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, the stretch of the Indus flowing through Ladakh became the only part of this river, which is greatly venerated in the Hindu religion and culture, that still flows through India.

one of the main attraction in ladakh is chader trek. The word Chadar means blanket and is used to refer to the trek along the frozen Zanskar River. The most amazing thing about the frozen river is how unfrozen it is! water prevents the blanket from completely smothering the river which in places retains it rapids; all the more fear some in temperature of -30ºC the trek goes by shuffling along the icy path! A spectacular and at times challenging trek across the Zanskar with opportunities to savour ancient Bhudhist monasteries and remotes villages nestled in the depths of deep gorges valley of Trans Zanskar ranges.! !!! i will keep posting more about chader trek !

Chadar trek is one of the most adventurous and most difficult treks in the country. The distance that is covered on foot is approximately 105 km and on an average, a trekker covers 15 to 17 km every day. The temperatures are usually 5 to 0 degrees during the day time and plummet to -25 to -35 degrees during the night in this region.

While most of the trek is completed by walking, trekkers may even have to climb icy rocks and boulders during the journey. During the journey, the trekkers will walk on the sheet of ice to cover the distance and will rest in caves during the night time.
