Alligator Bay - Biggest in Europe - Animals - Snakes - Alligators

Only 5 minutes from Le Mont Saint Michel in Normandy - France stays the biggest group of alligators in Europe, the Alligator Bay with more then 10 000 m2. For a fee of 13 Euros per adult you can explore the forests of Louisiana and the jungles of Africa and discover huge collections of lizards and snakes in the dragon’s maze.

Crocodylus niloticus corviei ( Laurenti 1768 )
Coloration varies between sub-species. Some may be brown, greenish or uniformly grey. The animals in this enclosures originate from Botswana. Crocodylus niloticus corviei is often considered the prettiest sub-species, with yellowish spots upon a blackish background. Males can easily reach a total length of 5 meters.

Alligator mississippiensis ( Daudin 1802 )
This animals are albino. This means that they display a genetic mutation: "albinism". Albinos lack or have an inhibited gene for melanin; the brown pigment found in the skin and irides. In the wild this animals stand very little chance of survival, because their white coloration exposes them to predators and inhibits their ability to rapidly absorb heat. There are an estimated 40 albino alligators in the whole world.

Blood Python
The blood python is a bulky, powerful, cylindrical snake with a small triangular head and tiny tail that constitutes 10% or less of the total length. Very unusually for a snake, the blood python is able to rotate it's eyes.

Varanus melinus
This varanus which was recently discovered belong to the kind of monitors which like to live in mangrove swamps. It likes to bask in the sun and hide in the vegetation when it is on the look out for a prey.

Morelia viridis
It is arboricolous. It spends most of the time coiled on high branches. When it's tail is firmly rolled around a branch, the upper part of it's body forming an "S", it is ready to catch a prey. A grown up is green and a younger one is yellow or dark red.

Cyclura lewisi
Endemic to the Grnd Cayman islands, this magnificently striking blue iguana is one of the most endangered lizards on Earth.

Elaphe guttata
There are more then fifty shapes or changes of colors and/or patterns, all of them are very peculiar and beautiful. We most notice that such changes have came through genetic selection.

Kinosternon baurii ( Garman 1891 )
Stripped Mud Turtle is a small turtle, with a carapace length of up to 12 cm. The skull is relatively small and exhibits little emargination. It is found in the southeastern United States, from South Carolina through Florida including The Florida Keys.

Pogona vitticeps
This lizard is docile and little aggressive. It lives in hierarchiczed colonies and it is not very active.

Simalia boeleni (Brongersma 1953 )
Adult Boelen's pythons exhibit a breathtaking jet-black coloration. When the sun hits the iridescent body, the snake appears bejeweled with an array of intense blues and purples. Boelen's python can often reach lengths of 3 to 4 meters.
